What do I do when I’m disappointed in myself?

Seeking Purpose

I was down and upset with myself this morning. Jesus walked me through it. I’m feeling much better, and I’m still working through it.

Rick Hesse ·

This morning I was pretty down and upset with myself.

I want my life to mean something. I want to help people. I have all these thoughts and things I’m trying to put together, and I still don’t always know what I’m doing from one day to the next.

I don’t think I’m different from everybody else in that. Most people have feelings they’re trying to understand and a life they’re trying to find their way through. I do too.

As I talked through what was going on inside me this morning, Jesus just walked me right through it. That’s how I experienced it. I’m feeling much better.

I’m still not completely over it. I want to leave that part in the story too. This was a good morning, and there are still things I’m working through.

“I don’t have all the answers, but I know of the one who does. I know Jesus.”

I believe He is the giver of life. When I have another question, that is who I keep coming back to. I’m still asking. I’m still learning.

One of the things I was thinking about is how unique each person is. I see that in my children and grandchildren. Each one has a personality, a way of thinking, a way of growing into their own life. Being a grandfather has let me watch that happen all over again.

The way I put things together is my own. I tend to keep going deeper into a thought, trying to understand every little piece of it. Somebody else may come at the same feeling from a completely different direction.

We still share so much of what it means to be human.

My work with business and my writing about Jesus both come out of this life I’ve lived. I want to help the little guy. I want people to understand things that frighten or confuse them. I want to share something useful from what I’ve learned, even while I’m learning it myself.

This morning, that included telling the truth about being down on myself, and telling the truth about feeling better.

I wanted to preserve this experience while it was still fresh. Jesus walked me through another ordinary morning. I’m grateful for that.

This is what I’m beginning to see in my own life. You’re welcome to take your time with it.

Let's talk about this

I have walked with Jesus for 50 years, and I am still learning. Some of my deepest lessons have come through failure and pain, where I have come to see His grace and mercy more clearly.

How does this connect with your own life or relationship with Jesus? Your questions and experiences are welcome, even when you see things differently.
